Weston Shore is one of the few areas in Southampton where people have direct access to the sea. It is popular for being a place for families to enjoy thanks to its wide, open areas and the playground and with cyclists and dog walkers. It’s also popular with fishermen and with sunbathers as well and it makes for a lovely walk whatever the season. Kite boarders have also been using the area around Rolling Mills and people also enjoy visiting the shore to watch cruise liners going to and from Southampton.
The shore is also important for wildlife and borders the Site of Special Scientific Interest in Southampton Water. The inter-tidal mudflats on the shoreline are a feeding ground for thousands of migrating wading birds. Weston Shore provides a habitat for many birds, mammals and plants, some of which are quite rare, such as the Hazel Dormouse.
The shore is a wonderful area with lots to explore and enjoy and we hope you can join us as we celebrate it and work towards it’s enhancement and promotion. The Friends of Weston Shore is a group for local people who are interested in enjoying, protecting and promoting the beautiful shore in Weston, Southampton. We are interested in taking action to help this wonderful location keep improving so it can continue to be a source of pride and pleasure for the people of Southampton and to visitors to the area.
In 2009 Weston Shore was awarded the prestigious Green Flag by the Keep Britain Tidy group in recognition of its beauty and importance to the area. The Friends of Weston Shore are keen to maintain this and help enhance the area even further. We have organized beach cleans to keep the beach looking pristine and have also got involved with the Big Lunch that has been taking place on the shore in recent years.
We’re looking for more ideas of what people want from the area and what they would like to see so please get in touch.
